We had our first meeting on the NID “social-network/collaboration tool”, last night at the mess in Heritage campus. It was a small yet fruitful first meeting and we’re hopeful that the numbers will grow as the days go by.

There were 5 people who came forward, discussed the idea and showed interest in developing the product. These incude, Mridul Batra and Mani from Photography Design, Yash Mishra from Graphic Design, Adithya Ananth who is a recent alumnus of Software and User Interface Design and Shivani Dhar from Lifestyle Accessory Design. Since most of them came at different timings, we had a general round of discussions in the beginning, explaining the idea and what we intended to do. That was followed by a small brainstorm session where we bounced off ideas amongst each other and took notes as we went along.

We’ve classified the different areas that one could take up. These are Administration, Design, Engineering/Development and Content. This is just a very high-level classification, although each one of these areas could have sub categories that one would could work on. Everyone of us who attended the meet took up different domains and responsibilities.

Adithya, an SUID alumnus who is also famous for the multi-touch desktop that he developed with Diwesh, gave us a lot of gyan on interactions and the essence of creating experiences that are more rewarding than just communities online. The discussions we had were interesting and we’re glad that he’s joined the team to help build this.

Yash Mishra is a highly energetic graphic designer who’s previous works include data visualization for large social networks like Facebook and Orkut. Yash brings with him a lot of enthusiasm and sense of purpose which we feel is really good to have in a team.

Mridul, Mani and Shivani will be helping us in the content and administration of the project and we’re really glad that they’ve taken the responsibilities themselves and are equally excited about the project!

One of the concerns that most people had (during our random discussions) were how they can help in the development of this project with little or no experience of software. The answer is simple – you don’t need to have software experience (although it would be cool if you did) to join the team. Coding is just one part of the whole gamut. There’s plenty of work to do in administration, design, interactions, usability, etc. We want more people to come forth and help us in any way they can so that the project gets the required traction and goes ahead in full steam.

One day, during a rather mundane session of Service Design, two students wondered what it would be like to have all the information that NIDians consumed from multiple sources, collected and made more accessible. They imagined a scenario where every student and faculty had a space of their own, could write their own content, share ideas and work on a common platform that was made for NID. They found the idea quite exciting and decided to delve deeper into it. They listed all the kinds of information a student at NID consumes and how they were currently made available. The more they explored the subject, the more they realized the potential for a service that all NIDians would find useful.

The two of them looked at existing social networks like Facebook and Orkut to see if there could be a solution. However, they both realized the idea they had was much more than just a social network.

They then went around campus, spoke to few friends and acquaintances of theirs, to learn what they thought about the idea. Almost everyone they spoke to found the idea to be cool and some even went on to suggest that they would be the first ones to signup if it ever materialized.

Doing is a quantum leap from imagining. – Barbara Sher

Encouraged with the responses and spirited with a new found enthusiasm, the two decided to execute the idea and make it a reality. They were aware of the previous failed attempts to make such a service. They knew that it was a mammoth project and the only way to make it successful would be to engage more students to participate in it.

This site is the story of that project. One that began with an idea.
